Parental styles and its Relationship to Identity in Late Adolescence in Amman

Abstract

The current study aimed to reveal the parental styles and identity among adolescents in late adolescence in Amman, and to recognize the relationship between parental styles and identity status. The study sample consisted of (438) male and female adolescents from the University of Jordan students in the third and fourth years. In order to achieve the aims of the study, a translation for both the Parental Styles Scale for (Buri, 1991), and the Identity Scale (Balisteri, et al., 1995) were applied. The results showed that the authoritative parental style was the most used with adolescents in the study sample, and the achieved identity was the most frequent among them, the results also revealed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the authoritative style and the achieved identity, the authoritarian style and the foreclosed, moratorium identity, the permissive style and the diffused identity.
