The Degree of Inclusion of the Twenty-First Century Skills in the English Language Textbooks for the Sixth Grade in Jordan

Abstract

The current study aimed at investigating the degree of inclusion of the twenty-first century skills in the English Language textbooks for the sixth grade. The study material is the textbooks for the sixth grade in Jordan, consisting of the two parts of both. The researcher prepared the study tool (content analysis card) consisting of six major skills, and each skill has several sub-skills totaling (38) secondary skills suggested to be included in the English textbooks for the sixth grade. The results indicated that the English textbooks for the sixth grade had a total frequency of (3917) for the inclusion of the twenty-first century skills. Communication and interaction skills ranked first with the highest degree of inclusion at a rate of 38.86%, while initiative and self-direction skills ranked second at a rate of 27.65% with high degree of inclusion. Collaboration, teamwork, and leadership skills ranked third at a rate of 20.91% with a high degree of inclusion. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills ranked fourth at a rate of 6.48% with a low degree of inclusion. Innovation and creativity skills ranked fifth at a rate of 4.21% with a low degree of inclusion. Computing and information technology culture skills ranked sixth with the lowest degree of inclusion at a rate of 1.89%.
