Abstract

The study aimed to identify the degree of teachers’ familiarity with the characteristics of the gifted and the indicators of giftedness and their ability to detect them among gifted students in basic schools. The study followed the descriptive survey methodology, and its sample consisted of (294) male and female teachers in basic schools in AL-Koura District, who were selected randomly. A questionnaire was developed consisting of (24) items distributed over two domains (characteristics of the gifted and identifying the gifted). The study concluded that the level of teachers’ knowledge of the characteristics of the gifted and indicators of giftedness and their ability to detect them among gifted students in basic schools was high, and the domain (characteristics of the gifted) was high. At a high level, it ranked first, and the domain of (detecting gifted people) came at a moderate level, ranked second. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the responses of the study sample members due to the variables of academic qualification and years of experience. The study recommended providing more training programs on the characteristics of gifted students and how to detect them for teachers in basic schools, preparing individual educational plans for gifted students to meet their individual needs, determining educational and developmental goals for them, providing standards and tests and providing training for teachers to apply them in detecting gifted students.
